Ensuring safe drinking water for all people in Canada

--------- SCRIPT ---------

Reporter Script:

Clean, safe drinking water is essential for our health and well-being. With World Water Day on March twenty second, it’s important to remember that many First Nation communities across the country have not always had access to drinkable water. But this is changing.

Progress has been made to address drinking water advisories in First Nations communities. Since twenty fifteen, more than eighty per cent of long-term advisories have been lifted ensuring that over eight thousand homes now have access to safe, clean drinking water.

Investments are also being made to improve the infrastructure needed and to recruit and train local water operators. With this, First Nations communities will be able to manage their water systems and maintain safe drinking water always.

Finally, together with the Government of Canada, First Nations communities are working to address the remaining advisories, prevent short-term advisories from extending, and transfer water and wastewater services to Indigenous-led organizations.
