Tips for opening up the cottage for the summer

(NC) We all know that opening up the cottage or cabin for the season comes with countless chores. But no matter how many lists you create and how many people are involved, there’s always something you might forget.

Here are some key reminders:

Evaluate the perimeter when you arrive. Do a quick walk around the property to check for any over-winter damage or uninvited guests.

  • Air out the buildings and hang out the linens to avoid mould and mildew.
  • Turn on the power and then the water so systems run smoothly.
  • Change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Remember your boating safety.
  •

That last one is crucial, and it involves some steps of its own:

  • Is your dock or boathouse afloat? Review its condition and make any required adjustments or repairs.
  • Check out your boat, and make sure it’s seaworthy.
  • Inspect your safety equipment including personal flotation devices and lifejackets.
  • Locate your boating license or proof of competency so you can carry them on you when you boat.

Once you’re all set, it’s time to enjoy. Just remember to follow the rules while you’re out on the water, for your safety and the safety of others.

If your property is on the ocean, the Great Lakes or the St. Lawrence River, the Canadian Coast Guard can provide you with marine safety and navigation information. They’re also the ones to call if you find a wrecked vessel or spot a marine mammal in danger.
