4 tips to get ready for back-to-school season

By Allan Britnell, Editor-in-Chief, News Canada

(NC) Now that the kids are back in school, we’re settling into our routines. While you’ve likely stocked up on new clothes, stationary and other essentials by now, here are four more things to consider now that the school year has started.

Get their eyes tested
Stocking up on school supplies is important. But pencils and notebooks won’t be much help if your child can’t read the teacher’s instructions. The Canadian Ophthalmological Society recommends having your child’s eyes tested annually and taking any necessary actions, such as getting them glasses, as soon as possible. It’s a key step in helping them achieve their full academic potential.

Establish a communications plan
Increasingly, digital tools like cellphones, laptops and digital access, are becoming essential school supplies. Luckily, this is the time of year when telecom companies, like Telus or Koodo, offer the best deals to entice students and parents to upgrade or purchase new plans and save money. If you are in the hunt for a new phone and plan, take advantage of the season and head to your local mobility store or search online for their latest deals.

Budgeting for post-secondary school
There’s no denying that getting a post-secondary education can be expensive. Beyond tuition, there is the cost of books and other educational tools, transportation and more. That doesn’t even factor in food and accommodations if they leave home for school. So, it’s essential for students to keep track of their finances. The best way to do that is with a budget. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada has a free, easy-to-use budget planner on their website to help get you started.

Post-secondary education planning
In addition to a Registered Education Savings Plan, there are several ways that students can help plan to cover tuition costs. Many schools offer admission scholarships based on academic, artistic or athletic achievements. You may also qualify for bursaries or other financial aid directly from the school, or from charities and foundations. One example is the CST Foundation, which offers awards up to $7,000 for students entering post-secondary education for the first time. The funds can be used to cover the cost of tuition and related expenses such as books, supplies or living expenses.
