How to serve food safely
--------- SCRIPT ---------
Reporter Script:
With high food prices, half of all Canadians admit to consuming things even though they were unsure if they were safe to eat.
But it’s worth noting that every year, more than four million Canadians get sick from eating contaminated food. Almost twelve thousand of those people end up in hospitals, and about two hundred and forty die.
Whether you’re hosting a large gathering or serving a solo supper, you want to ensure your food is handled and prepared properly so no one gets food poisoning.
Health Canada recommends four key food safety steps.
The first is to wash your hands and all work surfaces, and to rinse all veggies and fruits before chopping them.
Use separate cutting boards for fresh produce and raw meat, poultry, fish and seafood.
Next, use a digital food thermometer to check that meat and other foods have reached safe internal temperatures.
Finally, refrigerate or freeze leftovers within 2 hours after your meal.
