Ways to save energy this winter

(NC) Winters in Ontario can be tough, between heavy snowfalls, icy conditions and the worry that comes with increased costs from energy usage. With a few simple steps, you can keep your home warm, safe and energy-efficient—without driving up your natural gas bill.

Service your fireplace. If you have a natural gas fireplace, make sure it’s operating efficiently. A clean, well-maintained fireplace can provide supplemental heat without overworking your furnace. Check the glass for a proper seal, inspect the venting system and schedule a professional service if needed. This helps reduce energy waste, improves safety and keeps your home cozy during the coldest days.

Add insulation to your home. Don’t forget to add proper insulation to your attic and/or basement. This will help you keep your heat where it belongs, inside your home.

Seal drafts. Keep cold air out of your home by sealing gaps around windows and doors that could let warm air escape and cold air in. Use caulking or weatherstripping to seal leaks. This reduces furnace workload and lowers energy costs.

Consider a new heating system. A furnace typically lasts 15 to 20 years, but this can extend to 30 years or more with excellent maintenance, while neglect can shorten its life to 10 to 12 years. A high-efficiency furnace may cost more up front, but because it uses less fuel to heat your home, you’ll save on energy costs over its lifetime.

Clear outdoor vents and meters. Snow and ice can block appliance vents and cause gas meters to malfunction, which can disrupt your natural gas service. Remember to keep vents and meters clear to ensure safe and reliable operation.

Manage hot water usage. In the winter, hot water usage often increases as we look for warmth and comfort during colder days. While taking a cooler shower may not be appealing at this time of year, it’s not the only way to manage it. You can insulate accessible hot-water pipes, fix leaks and choose lower-temperature laundry cycles. These small changes can reduce natural gas use without compromising comfort.

Winter doesn't have to mean higher bills. By sealing drafts, maintaining your furnace and upgrading insulation, you can stay cozy and save money too.
