How to show love to grandparents and seniors
(NC) When it comes to showing your grandparents, elderly parents or other seniors that you care about them, finding the right way can be a challenge. Why not think outside the box with thoughtful, creative gifts that offer more than just material value? Whether it’s a handmade treasure, an unforgettable experience or a gift that supports a meaningful cause, these ideas are sure to leave a lasting impression.
Get creative
In a world filled with mass-produced items, a handmade gift stands out as something truly special and can be more meaningful than store-bought ones. You can give a gift from the heart by tapping into your creative side and making something. If your hobby is painting, give the gift of art. If you know your way around the kitchen, you can give the gift of a home-cooked meal or treats. Or premix the dry ingredients for your favourite cookie or brownie recipe and share in a decorative container.
Repurpose treasures
The term regifting doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Not only is regifting a way to share something you love, but it’s also a sustainable choice that reduces waste. So instead of buying something new, find something in your home that you’ve previously enjoyed – say, a favourite book – and wrap it up with a little note explaining why it was so important to you that you wanted to share it.
Give a gift that multiplies in value
Consider donating in their name to a cause they care about. Many charitable organizations even partner with governments and corporations to provide matching donations, so your individual contribution is multiplied. Every day, for example, 86,320 people receive food from World Vision Canada in partnership with the World Food Programme. A donation of $150, which feeds feed a family of five for two months, will be multiplied seven times, growing it to $1,050.
Give of yourself
Sometimes in the busyness of life, what gets lost is focused time with family and friends. Booking some time with loved ones or devoting your attention to someone one-on-one can be the most caring gift of all. It’s not always easy for seniors to get out and do something on their own, so you could go to them or pick them up for a day out to do something they love.
