Not taking control of our finances can create major stress. Many of us know we should be more proactive with our finances, but we don’t know how.

November is Financial Literacy Month, so now is a great time to start. There are many concrete steps to improve financial well-being, and a wealth of unbiased online resources to help.

Here are a few tips on managing your money from Jane Rooney, Canada’s Financial Literacy Leader.

A budget is the best foundation. It may sound obvious, but it can be a really effective tool to figure out where your money is coming from and where it’s going. It can help you identify your financial wants versus needs. Once you’ve created a budget you can start on a plan to pay down debt and to set aside emergency savings.

Rooney adds that the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada has tools and resources to help you achieve greater financial well-being, including a helpful budget calculator.
